Kansas City MO Wildlife Information

Missouri Wildlife Commission: 816-622-0900

Missouri Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Kansas City, you can contact the Missouri Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Missouri Fish & Wildlife Agency. Missouri game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Kansas City wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Kansas City like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Catch-It Wildlife & Pest Control, Inc. at 816-912-0296.

Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Kansas City, MO

Missouri State bird: Eastern bluebird
State mammal: Missouri mule
State reptile: Three-toed box turtle
State amphibian: North American bullfrog
State fish: Channel catfish, paddlefish
State insect: European honeybee

Missouri is primarily flat, wet land for the southern half of the state and then gradually rises through foothills to the Ozark Mountains. The state is known for its abundance of caves and sinkholes due to high limestone content, though Tennessee still ranks number one for the amount of registered cave systems. The state is fairly humid, and has hot summers with cold winters. Cotton and rice are the predominate crops.

Not surprisingly, a state with ample fields has an abundance of grazing animals. Missouri has everything from elk to American bison. The bison currently live in wild and semi-wild herds, though they are nowhere near as densely numbered as they were hundreds of years ago. The plains also have plenty of badgers. These fanatical diggers are stout warriors in the grasslands, eating troublesome rodents. They are not particularly friendly, and won't hesitate to pick a fight.

Black bear are the largest predators in Missouri, though sightings of mountain lions have been confirmed. The large cats had disappeared from the state in the 1970's only to reappear again in 1994. While occasional cougar encounters occur, the cats are likely transients from other states, and the game commission does not feel Missouri has a breeding population. Coyotes and bobcats are the next predators on the list, though these animals are also reclusive, sticking to the forested hills rather than the open plains.

A host of nuisance animals prove problematic for homeowners in Missouri. The state has plenty of raccoons, opossums, foxes, armadillos, and bats. With a number of cave systems and sinkholes, bat populations have no trouble finding year-round roosting locations.

Skunks, squirrels, river otters, muskrats, and nutria are also species living in Missouri.

The swamp rabbit is a creature native to the region. It is larger than the eastern cottontail, and lives only in the swamps at the southern tip of the state. Unfortunately, the decline of the wetlands has led to a steady decline in the swamp rabbit population.

Missouri is home to the alligator snapping turtle as well.

Kansas City Wildlife Tip
Getting Rid Of Field Rodents my crawl space - You would expect to see rodents running around in the woods, but not so much in the big cities. The District of Columbia is one of the exceptions to the rule. There are plenty of rodents in the city especially in the parks and places like the National Mall. But field rodents should stay in fields and not in your home. There are some solutions for getting rid of rodents my crawl space people have tried, but a lot of them turn out to be ineffective. Because of the city atmosphere finding a store that sells rodent control equipment are not that easy.

Some national chains of big home improvement stores will carry traps, along with hardware stores but that is as much as you will find. Gun laws make sports and hunting stores rare except in the Virginia side of the District. So as far as the city of Washington, the best way to get rid of field rodents is often calling your local exterminator. You should do your research about how they trap the rodents or if they use poisons because not all pest control solutions are legal in the city. You also want to know if they will use humane or kill traps and express your preference.
Kansas City, MO Wildlife News Clip:
KANSAS CITY WILDLIFE - Jackson County: Mindy The nuisance wildlife trapper, a resident of Kansas City and general manager of Spay and Neuter Animal Clinic and Wildlife management habitat, suggested to critter legislators a tri-county animal wildlife containment unit and animal control that would include Jackson county. S.N.A.C.S may be an incorporated organization and has applied for nonprofit status, she declared. Jackson County would need to commit $25,000 for a yearlong contract with the wildlife containment unit and would pay fees for each animal picked up, boarded for a certain amount of days or put to sleep. Ideally, many of the animals would be adopted unless they are vicious, very sick or very old, The nuisance wildlife trapper declared. So far, The nuisance wildlife trapper declared, she has received commitments from at least 50 animal volunteer organization willing to help out with the extermination process. Also, a couple of home improvement stores seemed willing to pay for materials to build a wildlife containment unit, she declared. As a wild animal lover boarding 22 raccoons, 15 opossums and two wild hogs, The nuisance wildlife trapper declared she's committed to the idea and moving forward with or without the county critter legislators' support. "We're going to do this. It may be so necessary. It's something really needed," she declared. The Kansas City pest control specialist agreed that something needs to be done to control animals, and declared he may be looking for ways to deal with the problem. But nothing can be done this fiscal year because animal control may have been not in the budget, he declared. "This might be a viable option, but I don't know if it's the only solution," The Kansas City pest control specialist declared of the tri-county suggestion. "It would be more expensive if we got into the animal control business ourselves."
