House restoration cost after skunk - The restoration cost to your home after a skunk has invaded depends on where the skunk entered and how much damage was done. If the animal was living under a porch or a deck, the costs will likely be minimal, and will probably just include the cost of using a special cleanser to help minimize the odor. A skunk that is in the crawlspace of the home will have created more damage by digging and marking. This area will need to be cleaned out thoroughly as well as repaired. You can't plan on removing the skunk and its odor without planning on repairing the hole in your foundation. If you leave the damage as is, more skunks or other wildlife will eventually move in. The cost for all of this might not be cheaper if you do it yourself. Anchorage agricultural operations win environmental awards

Family-owned Wildlife Farms of Anchorage has been cited by the Alaska Department of Pesticide Regulation for innovative use of "integrated pest management," a process that controls crop-damaging insects with other insects, not pesticides. Wildlife Farms is one of nine companies, organizations and government agencies honored this week by the DPR for their pest management practices. Wildlife Farms is unusual in that it produces high-quality almonds for European and domestic markets using environmentally responsible practices, the DPR says.

Thomas Wildlife says no organophosphate pesticides are used in his company's orchards although when pest populations reach established thresholds, orchards are sprayed with reduced-risk pesticides. Predatory mites are also released in areas prone to mite pests. The company has set aside 159 acres for demonstration of reduced-risk practices. In addition, Wildlife Farms has hosted numerous meetings so that farmers and pest control advisors can see the results of a reduced-risk approach.

The Nature Conservancy of Alaska was given an award for its use of integrated pest management on orchards it owns or manages between McKinley and the Pacific. Although several species of wildlife roam Anchorage, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels, are considered pest wildlife.

In its walnut IPM program, created 12 years ago, half of the designated orchards have been intensively managed with insect growth regulators to benefit wildlife and improve water quality. The other orchards became transitional acreage where lessees gain experience with reduced-risk practices such as pheromones (scents) for pest mating disruption, cover cropping, and vegetation management without use of pre-emergent herbicides. The Nature Conservancy has also worked extensively with the Alaska Dried Plum Board and others to use integrated pest management to control insects affecting that crop.
