It is these old country, and sometimes city, houses that are prone to having squirrels in chimney pots. Chimney pots are actually ideal places for these rodents to set up a nest. They have access to the outside, for collecting grass, tree bark and other odds and ends, as well as inside the house as a food source. There are some people that choose the obvious method for removing a squirrel from their chimney and that is to smoke the critter out. This entails, blocking the chimney on the roof, lighting a fire, and letting the smoke chase Chip and Dale's cousin out. Unfortunately the damage to the interior of your home can be extensive and expensive.

Getting a squirrel out of a chimney is not an easy job and the aforementioned smoking him or her out, is not advised unless you're a professional. The best, albeit humane way is to trap the critter. Now, since it's just a creature that wants a warm, comfortable place to live without causing any intentional problems, killing the animal isn't what you should be striving for.
