Henderson Wildlife Tip:
Will a strobing light or high pitch sound deterrent machine work on rat?
The market today is flooded by a large number of devices, each of them claiming to have the needed capabilities to repel rats and other rodents. Chief among these products are strobing lights and high pitch sound deterrent machines. The success ratios of these gadgets however are extremely questionable.
Strobing lights
Essentially, this refers to the use of high intensity and flashing light that most animals, humans included find extremely aggravating. However the use of strobing light has several fundamental undoing.
1. The positioning and placement of the gadgets is problematic. The lights run on electricity. In most occasions, rats would occupy dark, unused spaces away from electrical circuits and socket. It would therefore be impossible to scare the rat when you can't place it in the convenient and most effective position.
2. Rats have been known to gnaw on wires. Placing wired lights straight in the paths of these rats would be an incentive for them to chew through the wire, rendering your lights useless.
3. Strobes are made with the intention of unsettling the eye muscles with the continuous and fast paced flashing and dimming. While the lights would certainly unsettle the rats in the first instances, they would be quick to adapt to it.
High pitch sound
The use of high pitch sound machines to deter rats has simply proved ineffective. The general idea behind the concept of using ultrasound as a deterrent mechanism is that the powerful sound waves would act as an extreme source of discomfort, confusion, convulsions, pain and possibly death to the rats. This condition is known as audiogenic seizure response. It does not however, work as envisaged. This can possibly be attributed to:
1. They have a very short range. They have been claimed to work only in one room and not the whole house. Circumspectly, the rats would therefore move to a safer room and not vacate the house if these gadgets really work.
2. They run on electricity. As the case is with strobe lights, the gadgets have to be constantly connected to an electricity supply. Questions therefore would abound on their suitability in places like attics where there are hardly any sockets.
Conclusion
It is highly evident that strobe lights and high pitch sound machines do not in fact work as advertised by most salesmen. They are more of false hopes than real gadgets to house owners. The real solution in fighting rats is found in trapping and exclusion from the house.
