Many people suffer from this same problem, and some of those individuals have been battling nuisance rodents for years. They key to being rat-free is not in how many traps you set or in what bait you use. To kill a rat you need to understand how the rat lives and operates within the home. The first step for rodent removal is always to button down your home. Rats should not be able to get inside through any hole. Even though it goes against your instincts to seal animals into the building, this will make your trapping efforts more successful. The next thing you need to know is that traps are only effective if you know where to put them. Rats use the same routes in a home daily. It is not normal for them to branch out and explore untested territory. Look for areas where rat traffic is indicated. You want to set your traps in areas where there are droppings or urine marks. Do not clean the locations first. Set the traps; catch the rats; then do the cleanup.

Prevention

Things you can do to reduce your chances of wildlife problems include:

Tree Trimming
Trim or remove trees so that they are 12-20' from your house and outbuildings
Trim and remove trees with a budget in mind. Trees grow up to 3' a year!
Trim vines, bushes and trees 12-20' from all fences
Only allow wildlife resistant fences to touch house (do not provide them a ladder. Wrought iron spiked fences with decorative finials can be made unattractive to wildlife).

Home repairs
A majority of the calls we get are due to roofing problems
If you need a reputable roofer, we can point you in the right direction
If possible, a metal roof is always best
Replace damaged and rotted siding and trim
Have us install a cap on your chimney and covers on your house vents
Block access to the underside of buildings, porches and decks

General Home Prevention
Tightly cover all garbage cans
Do not feed your pets outdoors
Do not feed the birds- especially humming birds!
Do not feed the squirrels
Cut and remove thick underbrush
Eliminate brush and garbage piles
Mow your lawn frequently. Encourage neighbors to do the same

If you are sprayed by a skunk
The following is suggested if you, your pets, or property is sprayed.
The below mixture is an irritant to some animals & humans.
This may kill your plants & grass.
This may bleach your pet's fur, and clothing.
Do not combine ingredients ahead of time, as this is not a stable product.

Combine the following, and apply to your pet, yourself, your driveway...your skunk scent will be gone:

"Skunk Juice"
1 quart of regular strength hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
2 tablespoons of and liquid dish soap, except for Dawn brand

We assume no responsibility for your usage of this mixture. It may bleach, as peroxide does, but it works better than products that you can pay a lot of money for. Forget about tomato juice. The acid in tomatoes does not break down the acid in skunk spray like these combined ingredients.

Treat all wildlife as though it is infected.
Never touch or approach wildlife.
Treat all snakes as if they are venomous!
If you are bit or scratched by wildlife, keep the animal. Do not injure the head.
Contact us or your local health department when you are bitten. Said animal must be checked for diseases!
Never touch wildlife - bodies, nests, or feces.
Should you make contact with any of the above, wash yourself with soap and water.

Keep your pet's vaccination up to date. If an animal enters your home, your pets usually approach it before you do!
Do not feed the birds or wildlife in general. You are inviting more wildlife than you think! Never feed hummingbirds! The sweet smell of the nectar attracts raccoons, skunks & opossum! Norway rats cannot live in a residential area without an easy, free food source. I repeat, feeding birds, and wildlife in general attracts much more wildlife than you can possibly comprehend. If we had no scruples, we would mail a free bird feeder to everybody in the U.S. with our logo & phone number printed on it. If you or your neighbors feed wildlife, we guarantee that you will eventually have wildlife conflicts.
Never touch a bird or any other animals that have fallen from a nest. They have a better chance of survival right where they currently are, in most cases.
Install one or more bat houses. 1/2 of 1percent of bats carry rabies. Mosquitoes carry many diseases. Allow nature, (the bats) to make your big back yard more enjoyable- bats eat m-a-s-s-i-v-e numbers of Mosquitoes!
Do not keep any wildlife as a pet! Exotic & native wildlife species do NOT make good pets.
From the squirrels and baby raccoons in your attic, to the bats in your belfry; from the moles and gophers in your front lawn, to the removal of that skunk in your trunk, and the armadillo or opossum in your backyard.
