Clarke County Animal Services: (706) 613-3887

Animal ControlThis is the government animal control services operating in Clarke County and sponsored by the city of Athens-Clarke. This agency typically deals with domestic animal issues involving dogs and cats. This includes things like dangerous dogs, stray cats, pet adoptions, etc. However, this agency will sometimes lend assistance with wildlife concerns. Call (706) 613-3887 and ask if they will assist with your wildlife problem. To increase the chance of success, do not lie, but if applicable, state that the problem is a public health matter in Athens-Clarke, or that you feel the public safety is at risk, perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases.

Athens-Clarke Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 706-613-3616

RehabberThis is NOT a government agency. It is privately run, and operates on volunteer donations. This is a wildlife rehabber facility that deals strictly with wild animals. They may be able to help you with your wildlife problem, depending on the type of problem. The level of help might depend on their resources at the time. They will almost surely help in any case of an injured wild animal, or an orphaned baby animal, such as a baby squirrel or bird that fell out of a tree, or a baby opossum, etc. Please treat Athens-Clarke Wildlife Rehabilitation kindly and donate if you are able to.

Georgia Wildlife Commission: 706-557-3213

Game WardenThis is the statewide government wildlife agency in Georgia, using your tax dollars to address wildlife issues. Sometimes called the Georgia Fish & Wildlife Agency. Georgia game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and yes, wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. But they also have resources that may apply to your wildlife problem. To increase the chance of success, state that the problem is a public health matter in Georgia perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases.

Athens-Clarke Police Department: 706-613-3888

PoliceYes, the Athens-Clarke police department will sometimes help with wildlife problems! I've seen many cases of the cops chasing down an errant bat in your house or snake in your pool! To increase the chance of success, never lie to the police dispatcher, but if applicable, state that you feel your personal safety is at risk, or the problem is a public safety matter in Athens-Clarke, or a public health issue perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases. Success may come down to whether or not a police officer wants to show up to this call, or is available. It's not always consistent.

Athens-Clarke Wildlife Tip:
Listen to baby skunks under the shed - Often, when a skunk has decided to live under your shed, that animal will eventually have babies. You can listen to the baby skunks under the shed. The little guys will make a variety of sounds, all geared toward the mother, letting her know when they are hungry, frightened, or scared. You can't tell when the mother is in the nest just by the sounds the babies are making. Often they will be crying when she is there waiting to feed them, and they will also cry out when she has left to go find her own supply of food. What hearing baby skunks under the shed does tell you is that you have a skunk problem, and if you trap the adult you should also consider a way to find and remove the babies. Because skunks don't cause serious issues to a home or even really to a yard, the easiest thing to do is let the mother raise her babies until they are young enough to leave on their own. This will often only be 3 or 4 months. If that idea doesn't sit well with you because of the tendency for skunks to smell, you can have a professional come and trap the mother. The expert will then find a way to retrieve the babies so the family can be relocated together.
