This opossum lived and died inside the attic, under the insulation of course.

I commonly extract dead animal carcasses from homes and property. The very animals that commonly invade houses die inside houses, and when they do, they create a very unpleasant odor as the carcass decays. The successful removal of deceased wildlife definitely requires experience and knowledge of building architecture and animal behavior. I've cut and pried open every nook and cranny imaginable to locate and remove rotting critter bodies. I am the best - I always find the animal, deodorize and decontaminate the area, and seal up the hole I've cut open. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Dead Animals page.

An opossum in the attic – no surprises there - This is yet another story of an opossum found in the attic. Of course, the discovery of a living opossum may not have encouraged the house residents to place a call to me. No, this one was dead as they are in almost every case that I have dealt with. And not only was it dead, it was also generous enough to spread the word of its death through a disgusting odor that made it impossible for the residents to survive in the house. Thus, I was called to do something about the situation.

As far as I was concerned, it was more like another day’s job for me. Although I did begin my job by sniffing around here and there to determine the exact place where the carcass was to be found, I knew at the back of my head that I will eventually find it up on the attic. Needless to say, I was right. My impeccable sense of smell led me to the attic. I instantly figured out that the stench was coming from beneath the insulation and sure enough sniffing my way through, I reached the exact spot under which the opossum lay dead rotting.

The first thing I did was to remove the insulation and take the opossum carcass for disposal. As is my custom, I used a garbage bag to pack it in. Next, I removed the pieces of insulation on which the decay fluid and maggots were breeding and disinfected the place.

During the time I spent in the attic, I also tried to figure out how the opossum might have entered the house and I got my answer when I saw a number of holes in the attic roof through which an opossum or any other small animal could have easily slid in. Considering it my duty, I informed the homeowners and advised them to take care of it in order to avoid any such incidents again.
