I commonly extract dead animal carcasses from homes and property. The very animals that commonly invade houses die inside houses, and when they do, they create a very unpleasant odor as the carcass decays. The successful removal of deceased wildlife definitely requires experience and knowledge of building architecture and animal behavior. I've cut and pried open every nook and cranny imaginable to locate and remove rotting critter bodies. The Ceiling and the Dead Rat - I like to describe my job as a 360 degrees experience. I have been over, under and around different places looking for dead animal bodies and clearing them out. In case of the poor chap you see in the picture, I had to cut open the ceiling of a house to find him resting in eternal peace inside. The story begins with the usual frantic call from a frustrated house resident, whose house stinks with a terrible stench, making it difficult for everyone in the house to survive. And as usual, it makes me excited to get back to work.

When I reached the house, it did smell horrible (whoa!), and this is coming from me whose bread and butter depends on dead animal removal. Following my usual routine, I first started sniffing around the usual places where animals enter houses from such as the attic, the walls, cabinets, cupboards and even the heat vents. But I soon realized that although the smell was coming from some place that was hidden, it had to be somewhere unusual. I first narrowed down the spot where the smell was the strongest and then it somehow occurred to me to sniff around the ceiling.

And my instincts were right, as always! I cut open a hole in the ceiling and out fell a dead rat. My guess is that this one must have entered through the attic, got inside the walls and had too much free time on his hands to go roaming around the ceiling. Locating the dead rat and disposing it off was one half of my job. The other half was to disinfect the area using my special concoction of decontaminants and make sure that before I leave the ceiling was restored to its original state i.e. without a hole.
