|
DESCRIPTION: A thick, tan snake with diamond-shaped markings down its back, a broad head, and rattles on its tail. Can reach up to 8'. The snake I caught in this picture is just shy of 7', and
is a rare specimen in the central Florida area. The most deadly snake in the United States.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake – Misunderstood beauty
Far too often, the most dangerous of animal species, is also the most misunderstood. The eastern diamondback rattlesnake is one such animal species. As the largest and heaviest (in terms of body mass) rattlesnake in the United States, diamondbacks are very venomous and deliver an extremely painful bite that can be fatal if not treated promptly and correctly.
The venom that is injected through a rattlesnake bite contains a cytotoxin capable of destroying the red blood cells of its victim. However it is imperative to note that this animal usually seeks to avoid human contact, and only strikes out in defense. Many reports show that humans often receive a rattlesnake bite when trying to provoke or capture the snake. Other bites can result from placing one’s hand in a crevice without ensuring that it’s safe to do so, or walking too closely to where a snake is hiding.
Diamondback rattlesnakes can grow to be as much as 7 feet long (although there was one report of a 7.8 foot rattlesnake) and are so named because of the diamond-shaped blotches on their skin. They are found primarily in the southeastern United States.
Unfortunately this species is currently declining. If the population continues to trend downward, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake will be in danger of being placed on the endangered species list. There are several factors contributing to this reality. Those include the destruction of the snake’s habitat, hunting the snake for food and skins, and people just shooting them out of fear or ignorance. Education is the key when dealing with this beautiful and majestic animal, and because of its potential for danger, it is also to be respected. When an animal like this is respected and given its proper space (left alone), the scenario works out for the better for all involved.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake
expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
