Yellow Rat Snake – The Farmer’s Friend
Living in the country can be a unique experience for many people. There are so many things to learn and features to enjoy. Where else but in the country can one get a better picture of nature and human beings working together, to benefit one another. Such is the case with the yellow rat snake.
One would not think of a snake as a beneficial aspect to a working farm, but the yellow rat snake is different. It is truly the farmer’s friend, yet it needn’t display any special skill other than what is already part of its nature – part of its feeding habit. The yellow rat snake’s primary dietary item is rats.
Rats on a farm can cause a whole host of problems for the farmer. Rats are capable of destroying crops, eating through the harvest by breaking open grain sacks, and spreading disease to other animals and human beings. The yellow rat snake therefore, acts as a resource for excellent and efficient pest control. They are truly natural (and free) exterminators for the farmer.
Yellow rat snakes are located primarily in the southeastern region of the United States and are a very common breed. They make their homes near bodies of water, in barns, buildings, and pastures. They are a non-venomous species from the constrictor family, so it squeezes its prey to death. Their bite is non-fatal to human beings, however the bite can be very painful and if not treated, it can lead to infection. Bites are not very common unless the snake is approached at feeding time. But for the most part those that benefit from the presence of the yellow rat snake tend to leave it alone. It is a solitary creature that prefers to go on about its business.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
