Handling and Care of the Juvenile Corn Snake

When choosing a snake for a pet, it is important to choose one according to the level of experience you have with this type of animal. If you are more experienced and have been a long time handler, then a snake that requires more care and temperament consideration would work for you. However if you are just starting out as a snake owner, then a docile more even tempered creature will work for you. For first-time snake owners, a corn snake will fit the bill.

There are many breeds that can grow impatient with frequent handling, but corn snakes take well to handling. It has been said that they even enjoy being handled by their owners. They have an extremely easy going nature and are readily tame. It is best to start out with a juvenile corn snake as the younger you purchase them, the quicker they become accustomed to being handled. One item to note though is that even when they are handled, they do not sit idly by, they enjoy moving around a bit. So it is best to have a good handle on them and where they’re going. There is no need to grasp them and restrict their movement, but make sure that you can gently guide them on where to go if they want to move around a bit.

Juvenile corn snakes are easily recognizable as they are colored similar to adult corn snakes, although their coloring is a bit duller than the adult corn snake. They start out between 8 to 14 inches in length and when an adult, can reach up to 48 inches. Juvenile corn snakes primarily eat frogs, lizards, and nesting rodents. They can live quite well for many years in an aquarium home with proper substrate, water, heat lamp, and hiding place.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
