When one lives in an area where many species of animal exist, one must be aware of their surroundings at all times. In the southeastern region of the United States, brown water snakes are a common species – especially around lakes, ponds, and other larger bodies of water. This breed has a tendency to bask either on the water’s edge, or in the trees above the water. They are skittish species, and will bolt at the first indication of someone invading their territory. It is not unusual for a brown water snake to suddenly drop out of the tree in an attempt to escape a predator or human encounter.
What makes this practice somewhat amusing is that there are occasions when there is a boat directly under where the snake has chosen to drop down. It only takes a simple case of perfect timing for a brown water snake to end up in a boat below. Understandably, this can startle the inhabitants of the boat. Brown water snakes are often mistaken for the venomous cottonmouth snake. People believe that this snake dropping out of the sky is a cottonmouth coming to attack them. Of course, this is not the entire truth, but it has not stopped this myth from spreading.
Unfortunately for the brown water snake, when people are startled and believe that they’re dealing with a dangerous animal, their first reaction is to kill it. As a result, significant populations of brown water snakes are declining every year. It really takes simple education and awareness. When people are more aware of their surroundings and know how to recognize a dangerous species from a non-threatening species, it will reduce the incidences of an innocent snake being eliminated for no reason other than it looks like a potentially dangerous species.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
