Florida brown snakes are small (from 7 to 10 inches) and are completely harmless. They are brownish gray with a light band across the back of their necks and have a spot under each eye. There are black spots that run up and down the belly of the Florida brown snake.
It is fairly rare to see one as they like to stay in their underground burrow during the day and hunt at night. If you do come across one the best thing to do is leave it alone. The Florida brown snake does not do well with confrontation and its first instinct is to flee in the other direction. They are not venomous and if you are bitten for some reason, it may bleed but that’s all.
Florida brown snakes like what are known as “transition habitats”. These include swamps, bogs, and marshes, though they do like pinelands and ponds as well. Generally, any habitat with sufficient moisture and ground cover will do. To remain safe, they keep a low profile. Hunting at night and staying in a burrow instead of in the open reduces their risk of being eaten by a predator
Florida brown snakes eat a variety of larval insects, slugs, earthworms, small fish, and frogs; however, they are not extremely picky. They have also been known to eat small birds and other snakes. They do not have venom and are not constrictors. They use their powerful jaw and teeth to swallow their prey whole.
Mating season for Florida brown snakes is from March through June. The female gives birth to live young and the number of young varies greatly. They have been known to give birth to just a few, or as many as 50 at a time. The young look like adults, just smaller, and are mature between two and four years of age.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake
expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
