Corn Snake/Red Rat Snake (Snakes as Pets)
Getting a pet is exciting! They are yours to love, nurture, and take care of. Any kind of pet is a big responsibility, but getting a snake requires careful planning to ensure their health and safety. You should think about several different things before committing to a pet snake.
Length of Life -
Snakes can live twenty years or more, longer than most cats and dogs. If you are buying a snake for your child or yourself, make sure you can commit that time and effort to their health.
Breed -
In choosing a snake, you need to research different species and breeds. Some stay small while others can get very, very big. Each breed needs to be taken care of in a different way. Commonly recommended snakes for beginners include Corn Snakes, Ball Pythons, and Milk Snakes. They can be cared for easily and tend to be calm when handled.
Habitat -
The type of habitat needed should seriously be considered when choosing a snake breed. For instance, some snakes like Ball Pythons and Milk Snakes need more basic things than water snakes do. The level of experience you have with snakes should be your guide. Once you are comfortable caring for a snake with basic needs, you can move on to a more specialized breed.
Diet -
You will have to feed your snake prey animals. Depending on the snake’s size you may need baby mice, regular sized mice, or rats. If you are uncomfortable feeding live prey to your snake you can purchase pre-killed, frozen prey that will be warmed and given to your pet.
Escape Danger -
Snakes are slippery and will use any little opening they can to get out and explore their surroundings. You have to make sure you have an escape proof tank that is securely latched after every interaction.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake
expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
