What’s in a Name? – Pueblan Milk Snake
If you believe in creationism, you might have heard that Adam was charged with naming all of the animals God created. Throughout the centuries that followed, man has continued to name unique species of animals as they made their appearance on the scene. One such animal is the Pueblan milk snake.
The Pueblan milk snake originated from Latin America and now resides in the southeastern and southwestern part of the United States, and in parts of Mexico. Its colors resemble that of the venomous coral snake – in fact, they are often mistaken for a coral snake until closer inspection of the color pattern and other subtle differences reveals an alternate identity. This species is one of the favorites of nature observers and snake hobbyists alike, and when in captivity, is extremely easy to care for.
But how did it get its name? The Pueblan milk snake got its name from an old myth that they find their food by sucking the milk out of cow udders and other milk-bearing animals. The myth likely formulated as a result of where milk snakes like to spend their time when out in the wild. They are often found in dark, cool places such as barns and sheds in rural farm areas. The snakes likely not only enjoy the physical attributes of the environment, but the abundance of mice as well. However barns and sheds are in close proximity to cows and other livestock; thus the myth was born.
The myth is also far-fetched for two other reasons. One, it is not conceivable that any cow would tolerate having the teeth of a snake clenched onto its body; and two, there is no snake in nature that drinks milk. Snakes primarily eat meat and the eggs of other animals.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake
