Most of us are used to the idea of our dog tearing up our yard. Our canines not only love to bury objects within the yard, but dig under fences, and also simply dig holes in the yard. It's one of the joys of being a dog.
However, you should be aware that your dog is not the only animal that can be found digging up your yard. In fact, there are many different wild animals that are known to use their powerful and sharp claws to be able to dig up the yard around your home. If you're wanting to know what kinds of animals will try to dig up your yard, here are some that you need to be on guard for.
The two that jump out right away our moles and gophers. By their very nature, these animals love to dig holes within the ground where they build a rather sophisticated tunnel system to be able to get from one location to another. These animals live underground and do not come out until the night because they have incredibly poor vision. This makes it an important survival tactic to sleep during the day and forage at night, and their tunnel system allows them to sleep during the daylight hours in darkness while still having the advantage should a predator enter within their tunnels.
There are many other kinds of animals that will dig in your yard, however. One of the most common is the skunk, which likes to dig to find insects such as grubs for meals. It is not uncommon for a skunk to dig in several areas of your yard to be able to find a source of food for themselves.
Many other kinds of animals will use their powerful claws to be able to gain access into locations. Usually, this is done to dig underneath the fence so that they can get into a garden, trash area, or simply get into your yard. Animals such as the skunk, possum, raccoon, among others are able to dig a rather deep hole underneath the fence that allows them enough space to be able to get into your yard.
This is why it is recommended that all fences that you put up around your yard be buried at least a foot below the surface of the ground so that you deny these animals the ability to get into your yard. Most of the animals that you will come around that are common in suburban settings, like raccoons, rabbits, possums, and the like, are able to dig a hole under a fence that can go 8 or 9 inches deep. This is why it pays to be proactive and dig a deep enough area to deny them the ability to climb under your fence.
While there are other animals that will dig in your yard, these are the most common ones that you will likely find. Should you have an animal like this within your yard it pays to do what you can to remove it as quickly as possible.
