If you are calm, the animal is more likely to be calm. If you run round like a crazy person, shouting and screaming at the top of your lungs, the animal is going to be beyond terrified. It is probably considerably smaller than you are. It just thinks you're trying to eat it. And what do animals do when they think they're about to be eaten? They call upon their defense mechanisms. In the case of the opossum, you’ll probably be okay, because these are creatures renowned for “playing dead”. If you're up against a skunk, however, things are about to take a smellier turn. If you scare the skunk, it'll turn right around and spray its defense mechanism all over you. And then you’ll have a hard time getting rid of that vile stench. We hope you’re not planning on leaving the comfort of your own home for a while?

In some cases, the animal might not call upon those kinds of defense mechanisms. For some, the animal’s only form of defense is attack. If you’re caught unawares, you won't be able to defend yourself against teeth and claws like these animals have. When professionals deal with these animals they do so wearing thick, protective gloves, shoe coveralls, eye goggles, and more. This is a good sign that you shouldn't be dealing with the situation with anything less. If you don’t have those things to hand, it’s well worth leaving the job to the professionals.

If the animal is running riot around your home, try to contain it to one room if possible. Some animals will release themselves if they are left in a room for long enough, with an open door or window. You can try to shoo things along with a broom, if you feel you can do so safely, but always make sure you can get out of the situation, and that you are as protected as you should be. Grabbing the oven gloves don't act as protection, just in case you were wondering.

If the animal can’t be contained, or if you have since lost it, try to get everyone out the house, pets included, and grab the phone. It's time to give the professionals a call. They’ll know the places these critters are likely to be hiding, and they’ll have all the tools for the job. Long and thin tubes with cameras attached can be used to pinpoint the exact location of animals that have gotten stuck in wall cavities and other tight squeezes. The appropriate traps can be used to contain the little beasts, and then the right action will be taken after the animal has been captured too. With the process of wild animal removal and control there are many legalities to take into account.
