Admittedly the opossum might be knocking your garbage can over, but you can always just make sure that lid is firmly shut by tying it with a strong rope or with bungee cords.

Usually, your local opossum will stay in your garden for long enough to get its fill of the bugs and rodents that are running around and then move on to complete its task elsewhere in the neighborhood. If it really isn't bugging you too much, it wouldn't hurt just to let the critter do its job!
