Camden NJ Wildlife Information

New Jersey Wildlife Commission: 609-292-6685

New Jersey Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Camden, you can contact the New Jersey Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife Agency. New Jersey game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Camden wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Camden like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Professional Wildlife and Rodent Removal at 856-203-6592.

I also have listed several sources for free Camden wildlife help. One example, if you've found an injured animal or lost baby bird or other baby animal is the Camden Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 610-926-3136 Or just read below for more info about the wild animals of Camden.

Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Camden, NJ

New Jersey State bird: Eastern goldfinch
State mammal: Horse
State fish: Brook trout
State insect: European honeybee

New Jersey has four very different habitat regions, making it one of the most bio-diverse states in the United States. The coastal area is loaded with beaches and almost has a completely different human culture than the rest of the state. Urban New Jersey is right across from New York City, and this is one of the most densely populated areas of the state. In contrast, the southern part of New Jersey is dominated by pine trees and thick forest, and it is sparsely populated with people compared to the rest of the state. Up in the northwest, hardwood forests and mountains start the transition into the type of vegetation seen in the rest of the Northeast.

The wide variety of habitats means a wide variety of animals. New Jersey has over 1000 different animal species. These animals find homes in pine forests, hardwood forests, freshwater and saltwater marshes, and beach ecosystems.

Of the 90 different mammal species in this state, the black bear is the largest. These predators are most commonly found in the northwest portion of the state but have been spotted in every county. The bears are particularly problematic because of how populated the northwest part of the state is with humans. As a rule, black bears mind their own business; however, in a state where people and garbage are plentiful, bears can become frequent visitors to local dumps or garbage cans. The second largest predator in this state is the coyote. These canines are scarce, and spend their time in the wilder region of New Jersey. The large predators in this state are not considered nuisance animals like the smaller mammals that like to run amok.

Hikers out looking for animals will find more white-tailed deer than in any other state in the country. In addition to the deer, squirrels, skunks, foxes, raccoons, beaver, and groundhogs are all common sightings when out in the woods. Mammals don't hold all the glory for wildlife spotters. New Jersey has hundreds of bird species, including a growing population of bald eagles.

With so much water in the state, it's no wonder there are over 300 species of fish, reptiles, and amphibians in both freshwater and saltwater regions. New Jersey has swordfish, sturgeon, copperhead snakes, rattlesnakes, snapping turtles, and a colorful frog known as the Pine Barrens tree frog.

Camden Wildlife Tip
What To Do If You Hear Rodent In The Walls Scratching - If you suddenly start hearing things - particularly scratching and scrambling you may well wonder what the noises are. Could the noise seem to come from inside your walls - after all, nothing could be living in there - could it? Well, yes, if you have rodents in your attic then it won't be long before you have them in your wall or crawl space. Rodents are adept at gaining access to any place they find interesting - their natural curiosity drives them on and their ever-growing teeth enable them to chew their way into anywhere and everywhere. If you hear rodent in the walls scratching then you must take immediate, urgent steps to deal with the problem before they cause a lot of damage to your home.

The best way to handle the rodent in the wall is to listen carefully to the area you're hearing sounds from. If you can get access through the same way it got in there (vents or pipes) you may be able to lure it out with bait. If not, then you will most likely need to cut a hole in the wall to get the animal out.
Camden, NJ Wildlife News Clip:
Wildlife - This year's woodchuck and beaver hand capturing goal is to trap significantly increased Opossum

"If you want to regulation woodchuck and beaver numbers, you need to reduce the number of females available for breeding." In northwest New Jersey, perhaps the biggest change in hand capturing regulations this fall involves the moving of nine permit areas from Zone 4 to Zone 2. For more on Camden wildlife, read on.

That gives Bug sprayers in those nine permit areas a nine-day season, instead of the two- or four-day split season they had under the old format. Before, the Bug sprayers had to buy a special $53 multi-zone male rodent license or $79 all-season license to trap and release significantly increased than the two or four days. Snakes and coyotes are not all mean.

According to The snake identification picture expert, moving the permit areas to Zone 2 will cost the DNR between $30,000 and $50,000 in license revenues because Bug sprayers no longer need to buy the significantly increased expensive license. But at a time of high woodchuck and beaver populations, the increase in hand capturing opportunities is a fair trade. Remember to treat the wild animals of Camden, New Jersey, with respect and care.

Although the zone boundaries have changed, the rifle-shotgun line - basically the Red River Valley - remains the same as in previous years. Hooray for wild creatures and critters!

The avid animal ratcher tells us if fox and coyote this size can't make it, the chances of survival for those that live in this habitat are minimal. The animal ratcher says he talked to a crew of Wildlife and Fisheries agents and they think there's a possibility of disease. For that reason, he and others in this area say they will not trap on these grounds. The animal ratcher says he'd like to see the critter capture period postponed one more month to let the water recede and give them a chance to get back to their natural habitat.
