How to tell if mice or rats are in the loft -You will know if mice or rats are in the loft first by sound. Most homeowners hear rodents before they see the animals. Any sound that is akin to scratching or chewing is a good indicator that an animal is in the loft. Aside from sound, exploring the loft and finding droppings or chew marks is another indication that an animal is living up there. Regardless of what animal it is, you need to have the creature trapped and removed. Rats and mice are easy to distinguish between. A rat is bigger and will leave bigger droppings and more obvious signs of passage. Mice are more discrete, with droppings that are small, like rice. Large-scale damage is most likely done by a large creature. Rats will tear through most substances, making quick work of insulation and other building materials. A mouse is less messy in its destruction, though both animals can cause serious issues within a building. Mouse or rat, the animal must be removed.

Santa Cruz residents oppose raccoon law

The bill was introduced by Sen. Jackie Speitzer, , who said citizens have a right to try a referendum effort, but she believes there is overwhelming public support for the law. Santa Cruz County animal services in Santa Cruz, California, declined to comment on the matter, as did Santa Cruz Animal Control.

"The people who supported SB861 were many of the animal rights movement leaders," she said. "Their goal is my goal. We don't want unwanted animals to be put down, and quite possibly the vast majority of raccoons in animal shelters are given up because of concern about aggressive behavior."
