Why do skunks spray?

Skunks are small adorable creatures with spotted, black and whites stripe, no doubt it is a furry animal. After seeing them you have strong desire to keep them at your home with your care. Skunks are mostly found in North and South America and belong to family Mephitidae. Skunks are typically around the size of domestic cat. They are approx 18-19 inch (20 to 48 centimeters) and weights around 7 ounces to 14 lbs. There is no pattern of black and white stripes on their skin. Mark feature of skunks is to spray a liquid with unpleasant smell. Skunks spray scent to defense itself from predators. Spraying is not a first line defense for skunks.

Physical description

Family - Mephitidae
Size - approx 18 to 19 inch
Color - mostly skunk fur color is black and white in stripes. But some skunks are grey and brown color and few are cream in color.
Diet - Omnivores, eating both animal and plants. Skunks are primary predator of honey bee.
Behavior - Skunks are solitary in nature when not breeding. During day they shelter in deep dig burrows which can be dig by their powerful front claws.
Hibernation - not true hibernator

Skunk is well known for the anal scent spray. Which is very un-pleasant in smell but safe for skunks against it predators. Unless Skunk not use spray for first line defense until unless it is not needed. Skunk defensive posture is with erect tail and puffed tail, indicating it may be about to spray. Skunk use spray as a defensive weapon for himself. Spray comes from two gland of Skunk, which is present at either side of anus. Skunk spray is a mixture of sulfur which contains chemical called thiols. Muscles located near the scent spray gland help to spray with high accuracy of 3m or 10ft. Spray causes temporary irritation and blindness.
