Connecticut is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional North Haven wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some North Haven animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

North Haven Wildlife Tip:

Keeping squirrels out of my bird feeder

Of all the antics a squirrel performs, perhaps the most frustrating and seemingly inexplicable is getting into your bird feeder. Now, this is terrible if you love your birds, but even if you don't, this is far from an ideal scenario.

If a squirrel can access your bird feeder, then it can get into all sorts of places in your house. Therefore, it is worth it to educate yourself on how to prevent these pesky creatures from ruining the birdseed.

Remove the feeders from the garden

Most of us keep our bird feeders in the garden because that is where most of the birds in the neighborhood like to lurk, and it is easily accessible to your pet birds as well. However, it is also very much accessible to the pestiferous squirrels.

You don't have to keep your feeder in the garden; roofs and terraces will work just as well and will be relatively less accessible to squirrels.

Spice things up

This does not mean what you think it means. I swear that it is entirely relevant to your strategy for keeping squirrels as far away from your bird feeders as possible. What you will do is add cayenne pepper to the seed mixture that you place for the birds, and the pesky rodents will slink away dejectedly.

This is because squirrels hate peppers, or anything spicy for that matter. The good news is that birds are perfectly fine with this addition, so it can't hurt to give it a try.

Mix things up

Once again, you keep the squirrels at bay by messing around with the thing they so crave: birdseed. This time though, you add a lot of different seeds together to create a diverse mixture. Squirrels usually prefer one type of seed.

Try to ensure that you add seeds that squirrels don't like at all, such as white millet, and safflower.

Invest in squirrel-proof bird feeders

Yes, they exist. What an amazing world, huh? These bird feeders are essentially affixed on top of a pole, so that's bad enough for the squirrels. However, they are also usually equipped with "baffles," which are essentially obstacles that prevent the rodent from climbing up the pole.

They commonly come in a tornado or wrap-around shapes, and they are quite pleasing to look at as well. Moreover, these special feeders are not expensive and are sustainable.

Just give them their feeder!

If nothing works, or you are too lazy, the best thing you can do is to put separate feeder for the squirrels themselves. This should include all the things that they love, including nuts and berries. This will ensure that the creature will be satiated, and it won't have to approach your bird feeder to fill up its belly.
