Connecticut is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Winchester wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Winchester animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Litchfield County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Litchfield County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Winchester Wildlife Tip:

How to prevent raccoons from entering chicken coops

Raccoons may feed on chickens. They will also raid chicken coops for chicken feed and water. Even though they prefer nuts and fruits, they will also eat worms, insects, and other animals because they are readily available.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, but they have also adapted to living in the urban areas. They have become bold and will raid a chicken coop during the day as well. So it is important to practice preventive methods.

Learn their habits

To get rid of raccoons you have got to learn their habits as well as their instincts. If you are raising chickens, then you are likely to encounter from January to September, because they look for places to nest during that time.

This is the time when they have babies, so mama raccoons look for reliable food sources and also a place to give birth to babies and keep them there for the winter. Your raccoon chose to live under the chicken coop because it's dark, warm and cozy there. The food and water supply are also abundant.

Methods of killing

A raccoon will bite the upper neck, or the head to kill the bird. Usually, it'll bite the head off and leave it at some distance from the body of the bird and tear and chew the breast. They also mutilate poultry within the cages by pulling their heads and legs off. They will kill several chickens during the night but will eat one or two only. It may drag it away from the kill site several yards before eating it.

Prevention and control

It is important to raccoon-proof your coop. Raccoons are really intelligent animals, and they have human-like fingers so they can open coop windows very easily.

You can install raccoon-proof latches to the doors of the coop. That'll deter them. They will also enter the coop by digging or tunneling their way inside. One method to prevent this is to place paving slabs or to bury wire mesh around the perimeter of the coop. Hardware cloth is a great deterrent and can be placed around the coop as well as on the coop windows to prevent raccoons from entering the coop and eating the chickens.

You should not staple the cloth to the windows as raccoons will pull them out. Instead, use screws. You can also repel the raccoons by making the coop loud, smelly and lit. Use unpleasant odors and flashing lights.

What methods you should NOT use

Don't kill or relocate the animals. Even though it is permitted in most states, but it is inhumane, as the relocated animal will die. You may also keep a dog to repel the raccoons, but a raccoon will become offensive if attacked. Some raccoons carry rabies and might end up killing the dog.
