Orange Park Wildlife Tip:
How Long Does It Take Rats or Mice To Die After Eating Poison?
Rats or mice are one of the most troublesome of the residential pests. They carry and transmit a lot of diseases, making them dangerous. Also, they chew threw the things around and make a mess. All these things make it important for people to get rid of rats from their house. Mostly pest control can be done to remove and bar them. But, many a times, they may return. Usually rat poison is used to get rid of rats easily. There are pellets that can be used as food baits to lure them and poison them.
More about rat poison
Most rat poison is anticoagulants and it is possible that at times, a few rats may not eat this ingested food. However, mostly they do, and the poison slowly starts taking effect. Usually, it takes about 6 to 30 pellets of poison to kill a rat. Generally, they may continue to feed for a few days even after the first dose, if minor poisons are used. It may take several days for the poison to take effect completely and for the rats or mice to die.
You would know whether the mice have ingested the rat poison by the color of their droppings. If the droppings appear in the color of the pellet that has been ingested, then you are sure that they have taken eaten it. It is mostly the dye present in the pellet that gives this color. It is recommended that the rat poison pellets be replaced every 4 to 6 weeks for maximum effect. This will ensure that all rats will continue to get their dose of the bait and you will be rid of the rat menace in a few weeks.
What happens once they take the poison?
There is a myth about rat poison that the rats that have ingested the poison, go in search of water; this is not true. While we may find that the rats are dead outside, they usually will be found dead inside the house. Basically, they may have died outside, because they stepped out. The rat poison generally makes the rat lethargic and it prefers not to move around. The poison may also affect their eyesight. It has mostly been noted that most rats die in their own nests, which is inside the house.
There are highly effective rat poisons in the market nowadays that can kill a rat within 12 hours of the ingestion of the poison. These are lethal doses requiring just one feed and rats may also not feed again after taking it. Hence, they may die easily within 2 to 4 days. The only word of caution is that these poisons can be extremely harmful for humans as well as any pets in the house. Hence, extreme precaution should be taken. The anticoagulants work in such a way that they affect the rodents' blood, making it unable to clot. The rats, thus, bleed internally and hence, die.
