Royal Palm Wildlife Tip:
What to do about a house mouse on the roof

So, you are outside one day looking around your house and you realize that there is a mouse that is crawling across the roof of your home. Your first reaction to this is to think that you better do something to get rid of this mouse as quickly as possible, and that is quite understandable. The last thing you want is a mouse getting into your home and creating all kinds of problems for you.

However, before you decide to take any action at all your first step is to determine how the mouse got onto your roof in the first place. This is going to be a determining factor, a rather significant one at that, and how you will handle the situation.

If you have discovered that it looks like the mouse got onto your home by falling off of a tree branch, being dropped by a bird, or through some other means where it found its way onto your roof then your concerns are limited. This isnít an animal that was likely inside of your home and used a whole our gap in the roof or siding to get out onto your roof. That reduces your stress level greatly.

To make sure go and up to the roof and do a thorough check to ensure that there isnít any loose shingles, holes, gaps, or other areas that you can find that the mouse is using to get inside your home. If you observe the rodent for a little while you should clearly be able to see if this is true.

While you may not really want to be around when a mouse is present on your roof, if you keep your distance you should have no concerns. Plus, this should give you a clear idea if there is anything for you to have concerns about. If you see the mouse burrow its way in through a shingle and into your attic area, then you may have a serious problem that you need to resolve. Spending a little time observing this will help you out greatly.

If you do discover that there are places where the mouse is getting into your home, then your first action should be to try to stop the animal from getting in there in the first place. If you see it walking around the roof area and have noticed what it is using to gain access, try pushing the mouse off your roof using a broom or stick first to get away from your house.

Then, you need to make sure you seal that area properly so that other mice or animals are unable to get inside your house. Be aware that if there is one mouse that is gaining access then there are likely others, so you will need to do a thorough search of your attic and wall areas to ensure that there are no other mice that are getting around your home. They can quickly do a lot of damage so act fast.
