Mundelein Wildlife Tip:

Spotted a skunk in your nice and clean yard? Do shallow holes in your yard make you believe that skunk is scratching it for insects? Are you looking for simple and quick home remedies to get rid of them? If yes, then this post is for you! Skunks can carry lot of infections and their foul smell can also cause temporary blindness. Hence not only it is important to remove them from your home/yard, it is also necessary to make arrangements so that they don't visit your home like an uninvited guest! Here are some of the home remedies to get rid of skunks.

Citrus peels

Skunks are one of those animals who hate smell of citrus. So you can just throw peels of oranges and lemon in your yard area and if skunks smell or touch them then they will never visit your yard again. The smell of citrus is liked by humans and if you are placing them at corners then they become compost over a matter of few days and hence you don't have to worry about them. If you have noticed the holes dug by skunks then keep citrus peels near those holes as skunks will definitely revisit that corner and come in contact with these peels.

Removing food sources

Skunks can enter you home but usually they hang out in your open yard and garden area because over there they can find their food. They can look for insects and worms by digging your yard and can also scavenge in the trash bins. Also, if you have pets at home then generally you feed your pet in the garden area and skunks feed on the remains of pet food. You can definitely not remove fruits and vegetables from the yard but at least remove compost piles, pet foods, trash bins and birds feeders from there. Also, you can fence up the remaining garden. Skunks are not great climbers hence low fence will also serve the purpose but your fence should go deep into the earth as skunks are great diggers.

Ammonia soaked rags or cotton balls

Yes the same ammonia which helps in removing grime and dirt from your kitchen can also help in removing skunks from the yard. If you know the specific place where skunks usually visit then you can spray ammonia there or else just keep some cotton balls and old rags soaked in ammonia around your garden area. The odour of the ammonia will keep skunk away from your house. But this is definitely not a permanent solution as once the smell of ammonia evaporates; skunks can revisit your place.

Spread some bright lights

Skunks are nocturnal creatures and are scared of light; hence if you spot a skunk during night just flood the area with light. They will immediately run away. Try to keep your garden area enlightened during the night as well (you might have to invest on lights) as this makes skunk presume that people are still around and hence they stay away from that place.
