Great Bend Wildlife Tip:
Will Repellants Work to Get a Raccoon Out of My Attic?
So, you discover that a raccoon is living in your attic. All kinds of horrific thoughts are going through your mind. You know this animal has ruin your insulation, torn apart clothing and newspaper clippings you have up there. It is likely also left an abomination in terms of its waste.
What makes matters worse, is that it is still in your attic. You are trying to figure out how you can effectively get this animal out, and get it out quickly. This is left you searching frantically across the Internet to try to find solutions. In doing so you come across repellents, and you want to know if these work and getting raccoons out of your attic?
How a Repellant Works
How a repellent works is quite simple. Inside the repellent are chemicals that act as an irritant to the raccoon. When distributed in the appropriate amount, the raccoon finds it impossible to remain in an area. This causes it to leave.
Besides commercial repellents, there are a number of homemade repellents you can find online. These are often made using hot peppers. By boiling them in water, you then take the solution and spray it in the area where you want the raccoon to avoid. They really are that simple.
Do They Work?
This sounds like a great idea, and you are likely thinking that they probably work well. There probably is some scientific studies that show that raccoons are repelled through the use of these commercial or homemade repellents. They may even give you some form of assurance that these are meant to work. However, the actions don't always meet the hype.
To effectively work inside your attic, you would have to literally spray or apply the repellent across your entire attic. These are generally not strong enough to work for a long period of time or over a large area. If you have a large attic, you would have to put a lot of this repellent around for it to work.
It may work for a time. You could effectively scare off the raccoon for a few days, which may be exactly what you are looking for. However, understand that the repellent is only going to have an effect for a minimal amount of time. Meaning you are going to have to continually reapply it.
Eviction Fluid
If you are looking for a better type of repellent that is more effective, then you may consider eviction fluid. It should be noted that this will only work on males.
Without getting too much into it, the male secretes a hormone after he has impregnated a female. This is to tell other male raccoons to stay away. If you use some of this product in your attic, it will be strong enough to keep raccoons away from the area, as long as they are males.
What you may find is that your solution for getting rid of a raccoon is rooted in something else. These repellents are just not solution.
