Lake Charles Wildlife Tip:
What do wildlife rehabilitators do with opossums?

Wildlife rehabbing is primarily part of the PAWS' work with the wildlife. They have established their expertise in the wildlife center by simply working with more than a hundred thousand wild animals of more than 260 various species in the past 30 years. This may be very stressful and demanding, however, their satisfaction comes when they see an animal recover and come back to the wild and the free life just makes it worthwhile.

The wildlife rehabbing is a professional that is capable of giving the treatment and care of a sick animal, injured or even orphaned animals from the wildlife. Their goal is to release the animal to the wild again once they are ok and they can go on with their normal life in the wild. To be able to release the animals, they must able to act the way they do before the injury for them to cope up with their habitat and with the other species once again. An effective rehabbing must meet the unusual physical and psychological needs of every species that they handle. It is a combination of aspects of Vet Med, animal behavior, biology, animal husbandry and other associated fields.

The wildlife rehabbers will not try to turn the wild animals into domesticated animals. They know for a fact that this will never happen and that is not possible. Human contact with the injured animals at PAWS will be kept to a minimum, the animals will be held in captivity only until such time that they are capable to live in the wild in an independent manner, since that is their nature. They are not the domesticated pets that depend much on the owner for food, the wild animals, particularly the possums do not depend on anytime to eat, they look for food and water source themselves, so they can live independently both in the wild and in the suburbs.

Those that are hurt and sick that prevents them from being able to survive in the wild will go through euthanizing, which is a humane manner of killing the animals. The rehabbers know what the life of the animals be if they are injured or if they are sick when released in the wild. They cannot survive there anymore and they will just be eaten by the predators, which they do not want to happen. They will just be the one to kill the animals in the right manner that is also accredited by the law. The wildlife rehabbing gives a chance to the people to know more about the wildlife animals, the risk of keeping them and how to deal with them in a humane way. Their job is critical, because they deal with a larger scale than the wildlife rehabbing alone.
