Natchitoches Wildlife Tip:
Is an opossum that is active during the daytime sick or rabid?
The opossums are nocturnal animals, they are mammals that are active at night time, they look for food through the night. This behavior went on till dawn comes. On the other hand, possums might be active through the day as well during cold weather or winter time when they look for food and they find it hard, since their metabolic rate is also greater. The possums as in the case of most mammals that are active when the weather is cold, needs a higher calorie intake to be able to survive. If the possums are active at daytime, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are rabid or sick.
This is just a misconception or a myth, since they are known as nocturnal animals and they are only seen wandering around the community at night time. Just like any other mammals, they also build a rough nest or they find a shelter to stay in through the day. It depends on their location, they can also take different forms of dens and that may also be in an abandoned place. They can build a burrow or they can also live in a tunnel. They can live in the cavities of hollow trees, abandoned nests of the squirrels and piles of leaves or rocks. They can also survive in the suburbs, particularly in the attic or under the porch.
Possums will not dig the burrows; however, they just occupy some abandoned burrows of other animals. They will look for some quiet and dark place where they can nest and nurture their babies when the breeding season comes. The dens are typically not their permanent hub, but if the food source if just accessible for them, they may stay there for quite some time. A possum might have a lot of dens that they will use when they need them. The ladies with the babies may be an exemption to this kind of behavior and they can also use the same hub for some time. Their hubs may be composed of lines grass, twigs, dry leaves and others. During summer time, they make a close den to the nest of the bird, but for winter and fall, they make a hollow sphere that is close to the nest of a squirrel.
Even if the possums live in a close place in humans, they do not show themselves to people often, because that may lead to a serious problem if they are seen by the farmers and homeowners in the suburbs. They are typically blamed for the messy trash bins and damage to home structures. When you feed your home pets all the time, you will see that the food will be gone in a faster span of time, not knowing that it is the possums that eat them and not your dog or cat.
