Edina Wildlife Tip:
What Is A Rat's Natural Diet?
Rats are one of the species of rodents. Generally, rats and mice are same but are differentiated on the basis of their size, rats are generally bigger in size than mice. Brown rats or black rats are one of the commonly known ones.
Natural diet of Norway rats
Norway rats are the ones that eat nearly all types of foods and if they are given the option to choose their own diet they go for fresh balanced diet generally contaminated food. Norway rat's natural diet consists of stem, flowers, roots, seeds, crayfish, frogs, birds, fish, lizards, grains, nectar, birds, seeds, sap, wood, bark, eggs, salamanders, fungus, and roots. Norway rats are very good at fishing and can easily catch fishes with its paws. They can also eat dead animals which also come under their natural diet. The quantity of water consumed by the rat depends on the type of food they consume. If the food consumed by them is moist they do not need much water but on another hand if the food is dry they will need water more than their normal level of consumption. But the common waste that the rats feed on in your house gives them a better balance diet and fulfills their water needs.
Norway rats will generally eat anything they get. The main source of their food comes from human beings. They make their nest or burrows near the trash can where they will get plenty of food. Like every other rodent they to store their food in their nest in a pile. Norway bats mostly hunt during the night time.
The natural diet of black or house rats
The black rat has luckily adopted itself in the environment of human beings and consumes anything that they get. They are generally found in houses and near garbage cans. Black rats are omnivorous in nature and it eats anything it gets like fungi, stem, leave etc. they are very much interchangeable to the squirrel on the basis of their love for nuts, fruits, etc. They consume very less amount of food in comparison to the Norway rats. The food they consume has a high water content.
The natural species of our environment pose a great danger from these black rats since these rats eat a lot of insects and birds. In the same time, they also are highly dangerous to the farmers since they attack the variety of agricultural crops such as oranges, coffee beans, coconut, etc. The brown bats absolutely don't like peaches, raw celery, and raw beets. A study shows that the most preferred food by the brown or black rats is cheese, scrambled eggs, corn kernels and macaroni.
