Fernley Wildlife Tip:
Is an opossum that is active during the daytime sick or rabid? If you spot an opossum wandering out and about during the day, it might be a rabid animal or it might be an animal just on the prowl for some food, shelter, or water. Although primarily known to be nocturnal animals, it isn't actually that unusual to spot them out and about during the day, and this is more so the case when it gets colder outside. The food is scarce and they'll need to hunt long and hard for it, hence the need to be out during the day. Another reason why an opossum might be spotted during the day is because it's moving home. Wild animals found in homes are often females nursing their young, and if their home has come under threat from a predator (or humans), the mother may move her babies in a bid to keep them safe. If you spot a mother or baby opossum during the day, there's a good chance this is the reason why. Either way, one thing you definitely don't want to do is approach the animal, mother, baby or otherwise. Even through the animal might not look sick or rabid, there is a chance that the critter could be carrying a number of diseases, even some that can be spread through urine and feces.
