Grove City Wildlife Tip:
HOW TO FIND AND REMOVE A SNAKE IN YOUR ATTIC

Snakes are incredibly agile creatures and can climb into almost any and every nook and cranny they find, looking for food and shelter. This means that basements and attics are not off limits. Though most snakes like to live closer to the ground, some types of smaller snakes will climb treats such as mice, rats or birds.

The probabilities of your finding a huge python or a big venomous rattlesnake in your attic are very slim unless you live in Australia or Africa. But smaller, non venomous snakes like to find their way into attics and if they have a constant source of food, they may not find any reason to leave. Clues that you have snakes in your house are occasional slithering noise and shed snake skins.

So, the first thing to do to remove snakes, is to tackle the rodent or vermin problem. This can easily be handled by a pest control, but they may not be licensed or be willing to remove snakes, so be sure to notify them beforehand.

A small snake living in an attic will not immediately be visible or easy to find. Snakes are generally shy creatures that hide away from what they perceive as threats. The snake will try to hide under any furniture or debris, try to remain close to its access hole or coil up close to places where its warm.

If the snake is small, which it possibly will be, you can catch it and remove it safely, if you feel brave enough. Catch the snake behind the head and support the body with your wrist, place it inside a pillow case and free it outside, far from your home.

Another safe way of catching snakes is by using safe traps that emit mice odor to attract the snake. Once the snake is inside, the mechanism does not let it escape and it can be safely removed and released in a safe environment.

If you definitely don't feel safe handling the snake, or if you are unsure about it being venomous, your best bet is to call a professional. Al though most pest control companies don't remove snakes, there are specialist who have the experience and equipment to do so.

In most cases, it is not necessary to kill the snake. Snakes are actually very helpful members of the ecosystem, and are great at keeping the mice and rat populations under control. Although many people see snakes as slimy, disagreeable, evil creatures, the truth is that if left alone, the snake will probably find its own way out, and if not, removing it and releasing it into the wild is the best option for everyone.
