Ohio is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Steubenville wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Steubenville animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Steubenville Wildlife Tip:

How do snake kill their prey?

Wild animals have to hunt down food to eat. While animals like lions and tiger pounce on their prey to kill them, snakes employ a totally different tactic. First of all, they have poor eyesight which makes it difficult to clearly spot their victim. Instead, they make up for it by using other sensory prowess to assist in hunting down preys.

Using their tongues, they pick out information from around them; they can detect smell and odor of prey. With the aid of small pits near their eyes, some snakes can pick up changes in the temperature of their environment which helps them in tracking down preys.

Snake have highly effective tactics, while there may be thousands of species of snake around the world when it comes to killing their prey, they all employ one of the following three methods.

Three ways with which snake kill their prey

1. Constriction

Snakes have perfect a special killing tactic know as constriction. Here they use strong muscles and rib bones to squeeze and strangle their prey before eating them. This method is common among both small and large snakes as it is effective.

The snake holds on to the prey using its mouth and ropes itself along the body of the animal. With each movement the animal makes, the snake tightens its grip on it which strangles the prey even more. Once the snake is certain that the prey is no longer breathing, it removes its grip on it and then swallows it whole.

It is often confused that when the snake ties itself around its victim, it breaks their bones, this is entirely not true except for large snakes such as pythons and boa constrictors. What actually takes place is that when a snake wraps itself around its victim, it shuts off the oxygen and blood supply to the heart and brain which ends up killing its victim.

Examples of snakes that use constriction in killing preys include the ball python, boa constrictor, and the anaconda.

2. Swallowing the Prey Alive

Some snakes can be equally impatient and decided to swallow their prey while they are alive. Killing and eating the animal at the same time isn't easy but most times, it does get the job done. Once the snake is able to subdue its prey and thinks it can swallow it while it's still breathing it may decide to go for it and most times succeeds. Since the teeth on the snake are curved backward, the snake can hold on to the prey and push it down its throat with ease. Once the snake is able to hook the animal perfectly with its teeth, it becomes difficult for the animal to release the snake's grip and ends up in its belly. An example of snake that swallows its prey whole is the garter snake.

3. Using Its Venom

Of course, this is common with venomous snakes. This tactics is also highly effective and works 99.9% of the time. The snake bites its prey and injects its venom into the body of its victim. Once in the body of its victim, the venom takes effect in a short time the animal dies and the snake swallows it. The venom acts by shutting down the nervous system which results in internal bleeding and then death.

Venomous snakes are by far dangerous and should be handled with safety, examples of snakes that kill their prey by envenoming them include, black mamba, rattlesnake, cobra and then vipers.
