Washington Court House Wildlife Tip:
What Is A Rat's Mating Habits?

Rats are highly social creatures. They prefer to live in colonies with a large group of rats. A wide range of rat species follows different mating habits depending upon the conditions in which they live. However, if we talk specifically about Norway and Black rat; these creatures reach their sexual maturity only within 2 to 3 months after their birth. Experts say that female rats are able to make for more than 500 times with several male rats only within a duration of 6 hours. They experience the receptivity season around 15 times per year and are able to produce around 2000 offspring per year.

Few rat species are also very selective for choosing the place, time and conditions for their mating season; whereas others care more about comfort during breeding. Note that, rats prefer to mate only if the female is sexually active. When the female is active enough, it will mate with several male rats in a short duration of time. A receptive female makes contact when several male advances when it is on the heat. Experts reveal that unlike most other mammals, rats do not have bleeding from the vaginal cavity when they go into the estrus state. But this state in rats can be identified with few other characteristics such as vibrating ears, arching backs, and short fast bursts.

The copulation period for rats completely depends upon their estrus cycle, and it may generally last somewhere between 2 to 24. The female simply arches her back in the standing position to make the insertion easier for the male. The process of mating ends when male bends down to clean its penis and female darts off. This process will be repeated again and again for the heat period. The female rat ovulates within 8 to 12 hours and can become pregnant just within a day after mating. A female rat can generally give birth to almost 5 litters per year depending upon several conditions such as lineage, health, environment, and nutrition.

Rat gestation period lasts for 21 days, and the pregnant female rat can give birth to around 14 babies at one time. After mating season, the male rat moves back to its habitat whereas the female rat makes efforts to build a cozy nest. The black rat prefers to develop nest over the ground, whereas the Norway rats dog a burrow for their litter. The mother rats take full responsibility for raising their babies. They protect them from predators and also provide food from time to time.

If rats have created nests in your house, there are chances that they are many in number and the population will keep on multiplying if you ignore their presence. It is important to take immediate steps to get rid of these creatures as soon as possible. Professional rat removal company can help you to get rid of rat infestation as soon as possible and will also clean the waste left behind by these nocturnal creatures.
