Raccoons In New York City
When people think of the magnificent city of New York, often their mind goes to images of Central Park or the Empire State Building. If pressed for a more negative perspective, many will immediately jump to the rat infestation that New Yorkers have long battled with. Very few people who live outside of this major metropolis would ever associate a drastic raccoon problem with such a boisterous and populated locale. Raccoons have always seemed like a more rural predicament, even though these critters have adapted to survive in virtually any human-generated environment. Over the past couple of years, raccoons have steadily increased their population in the Big Apple, with roughly 2000 complaints being logged about the pests annually.
Raccoons Are Illegal, So Why Are There So Many of Them?
According to the city law, any captured raccoon must be euthanized. Raccoons are known carriers of rabies, which makes them incredibly dangerous for humans. Thus, humanely killing these creatures as they are captured has logical appeal. No one in New York actively wants their friends, family, or neighbors to experience something as horrible as getting rabies, but for some reason, no one can bring themselves to kill seemingly innocent animals either. Instead of abiding by the law, many residents hire trappers who catch these pests and transport them to wilderness areas for release. The raccoon population isn't decreasing quite so significantly, but why are raccoons reclaiming the streets of New York City for their own instead of staying put in their wild habitats?
The Evolution of the Raccoon
As was aforementioned, raccoons have managed to evolve miraculously over the span of several centuries. Humanity crafted more and more complex civilizations, which typically uprooted and annihilated quite a great deal of different animals. Raccoons, however, survived. They became adept at scavenging and cohabitating with humans, despite the intense disdain they inspired. Living in a city has actually become preferable for some types of raccoons; it offers access to a multitude of shelters, and there is an endless supply of food. Under such conditions, any raccoon would be out of its mind to stay in the woods, where it is hunted by natural predators and has a much harder time scavenging for resources. Because of this, many raccoons are clambering straight back into NYC after being released in the wild by empathetic trappers and kindly homeowners alike.
