Germantown Wildlife Tip:
Will a bat house prevent bats in your home?
Bat houses are considered as a preventive measure to the incursion of bats into homes. However, it has become increasingly evident that they do not stop the bats from entering human homes and making roosts in tiny secluded areas like the attic.
However, it is extremely nice to have one in the house to aid the conservation of bat species across the world.
What type of bat houses are the best?
Bat houses mounted on trees are not recommended. Most times, bats do not even roost on them. This is mostly because of the following reasons. They are exposed to the most common of their predators among them owls and hawks. Tree branches above the house create shade. The temperature of the house will therefore be considerably lower than is considered optimal for roosting. The branches pose danger to the bats as they exit the house. They create obstructions right across their paths.
How to make a good bat house
The basic idea in creating a bat house is to imitate the natural habitat of bats. As such, more effort is put into emulating the classic natural bat home. A good bat house therefore will include:
1. Rough wood in the interior of the house. Keeping of the initial bark is highly advice.
2. Non- metal screens attached to be used as toeholds.
3. The box should be painted dark throughout. This helps to keep temperature inside the bat house warm.
4. Placement of the house should be in south-east or east orientation. This aims to increase exposure to sunlight.
5. The house should be hang ten to fifteen feet from the ground
6. Temperature inside the house can be maintained by the placement of dark shingles or tar paper both on top and below the house.
7. Ensure that there are no obstacles that would likely obstruct access of the house by bats.
If you are lucky to have your bat house inhabited by bats, installation of a pup catcher beneath the house to prevent falling of the young pups onto the ground would be suitable.
The bat population across the world is constantly diminishing. Threats on the bats abound from everywhere, but the biggest of them is the wanton destruction of their habitats by human beings. While a bat house will not probably serve the need of deterring bats from entering houses, the installations are a nice way to help conserve the bats in the world.
