Leander Wildlife Tip:
Do raccoons live or travel in packs?

Raccoons are animals special to the nature. As a matter of fact, they are very beautiful to watch. One can spend the whole day just watching them. They are smart and cunning and in fact they will out do some of the animals thought to be smartest. Therefore, you need to watch out for them. A good thing must have its shady side. Basically a raccoon is an animal that you do not want in your compound. They will destroy everything and leave your home in a complete mess. Therefore, you need to watch out for these smart but mischievous animals. But the real question is about their living habits.

Do they live as a group?

If you love the nature, then you may have taken a picture of a coon somewhere. Basically, coons are solitary animals. They do not travel in group. When foraging for food, they will normally do it alone. However, there are some cases where the coons have been spotted as a group. Here are some of the circumstances;

Mother raccoons will usually travel with her young one for the first 10-12months. However, if the coons are old enough, then they will have to leave their mom to forage for their own.
Related raccoons sometimes tend to leave together for sometime before leaving the group. If there are some coons from the same mother, then, sometimes they will live together for some time.
Female raccoons are known to form some of the loose communities where they feed their young ones together. These are loose communities because after the process, each will have to go on its own way.
Baby raccoons will usually travel in groups of 4-6. However, it is uncommon for you to see some adult raccoons traveling together.
When shifting to a new area especially in the rural area, then the coons will travel in groups.

These are some reasons that may bring these solitary animals together.

Having raccoons in groups means that there is something important going on with the group. It is either they are female coons that are nursing their young coons. Still, it could that they are just preparing to move to a new location. Otherwise, for a normal coon, it normally leads a solitary live. Seeing a group of coons should indicate to you that there is a special event happening with them.
