Virginia is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Salem wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Salem animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Roanoke County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Roanoke County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Salem Wildlife Tip:
Should I relocate a pigeon?

So you have a pigeon problem? It is not uncommon. Pigeons live primarily in cities and other areas of high human population. When they have decided to live on or near your property it can become annoying fast! They dig in the trash, litter the area in feces, and are known to sometimes carry roughly 60 different kinds of diseases.

Regardless of the reason, you will most likely want them gone. Unfortunately, this can be quite difficult, as relocation almost never works. Many people have tried trapping them and driving them many miles from home, only to find the birds return to their original homes. Like many birds, they have an incredible homing instinct, and many pigeons, once released, will even beat YOU back home!

The only effective way of dealing with trapped pigeons is to kill them. Luckily, as they are considered vermin, there are no laws preventing this. However, it is only a temporary solution. Pigeons reproduce very quickly. They can lay eggs up to six times per year with roughly two eggs each time. The point is that their population will not be effectively impacted by killing a handful of them in a trap.

The best way to keep pigeons away is with deterrents. There are spikes you can buy that are made especially for birds that you can place on rails and balconies that they tend to perch on. They will be unable to do so and must find a new spot. You could even buy fake statues of birds of prey that will keep pigeons away, much like a scarecrow. You can also try putting bird nets around porches to keep them away. They will also steer clear of wind chimes as they do not like the sound. There are other kinds of noise-making devices that will accomplish the same thing, as long as you can tolerate the sounds yourself. If you harass and scare them enough, they may start avoiding your property completely. For long-term solutions, you can also buy special bait that decreases fertilization and acts as a contraceptive. This decreases the population over time.

There are many ways to handle your pigeon pest problem. The methods people first think of tend to be either relocation or execution. These are however the least effective methods, and are more of a hassle than they're worth!
