In the case of raccoons, the minimal handling you will do with them is not enough to alarm the mother. They are already living inside your home, so they are somewhat accustomed to your smell. It is possible for a mother raccoon to abandon her babies if you keep them separated for a long period of time and then try to reintroduce them.
