Bats in the attic can not only be a noise nuisance, but dangerous as well. Bats leave droppings that can accumulate in large amounts and emit a foul odor. This odor is not only difficult to remove but can cause lung damage to the humans in the home. Many homeowners want to get rid of the bats, but the first step is to determine how they are getting in.

This requires a thorough and extensive inspection of your entire home structure. Bats are able to enter through openings as small as 3/8 inches. These holes are large enough for the bats, but small enough for you to quickly spot. These openings are usually located at very high areas of the home, near the roof. Not only are you able to see the openings, you are usually able to confirm that is their entry and exit point by the staining. The fur of the bats contains an oil and grease that will leave brown stains when they rub against it.

Once you have found the opening you can install a simple one way device. These devices can be purchased from most local home improvement stores. These devices will allow the bats to safely fly out at dusk, but not allow them to fly back in. You need to make sure that there are no other openings for them to enter the home. Bats are able to locate numerous openings with their great echolocation senses. Some bats will make their way into your chimney which will cause you to attempt to get them out. One way devices also known as excursion devices will also work with the chimney opening, as well as small gaps that may be found around the chimney. You should not place a cap on your chimney until you are sure all of the bats have left.
