Pigeons at a Public Location

Pigeons have gained the ability to roost anywhere. With over 300 species of pigeons, they have learned to roost on porches, in attics, in warehouse, and in gas stations. Pigeons not only carry disease, mites, fleas, and ticks, they have acid in their droppings that can cause severe damage. The acid in their droppings can erode concrete, statues, car paint, and so on. The nests that the pigeons create can clog up drain pipes and gutters. It is important to remove pigeons, but to do so in a safe and humane manner.

One of the safest methods for discouraging pigeons from your location is to install a deterrent. This deterrent can be a rubber snake, a plastic owl, a hawk or a scarecrow. These deterrents will be even better if they move and make noise. You will need to place the deterrent in a prominent position where the pigeons often visit. You should also move the deterrent every few days. Pigeons are smarter than most people give them credit for, and will eventually learn the deterrent is no real if it is not moved around frequently.

Another option for humanely deterring your pigeons is by installing a plastic spike strip. This makes it difficult for pigeons to land. These strips are easily installed and flexible, so that they can be mounted on most surfaces. These spike strips can be purchase from most home improvement store and attached using glue or zip ties. Some people may feel that these strips are unsightly, but there are able to be installed in a location that is hard to see from the ground.

Irri-tape is a ribbon material that drives away birds by using reflective features and a metal clinking sound. This is designed to work similar to pie pans, but is a more attractive method for businesses.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
