Snakes in Your Neighborhood – How to keep black racer snakes out of your backyard and your home

When you live in the state of Florida, one of the most common animals that residential neighborhoods have to endure is the black racer snake. Because of the commonality of this species of snake, a homeowner has to snake-proof their home and backyard, or they have to learn to co-exist with this slithery creature.

Black racer snakes truly live up to their name – they are fast-moving snakes; one of the fastest snake species today. They have very good eyesight, and unlike many other snakes, they can lift up their heads from the ground to better observe their surroundings and hunt for food. Black racer snakes can tend to be very bold. Most times they will flee when approached by a human being; however there are also cases of snakes literally “standing up” to their human inquisitor. If it feels cornered, the snake may strike out, and their bite can be very painful.

If you know the snakes are prominent in your area, one of the best things you can do is to leave them alone. These animals can be beneficial as they eat rodents and many insect pests. However, if you are not willing to share your space with the black racer snake, there are a few things you can do:

• Cut down any long grass or weeds – snakes love to hide here; and tall grass makes it difficult to see where you are stepping
• Raise wood piles off the ground – another favorite snake hiding place; put them on pallets
• Check your home and any storage buildings – Do they have small cracks or holes? Are there any gaps under doors? Are there any gaping holes in screen doors, or window screens? These are all easy access points for a snake to make himself at home
• Cover roof vents, open pipes, and any other orifices where snakes might be able to enter your home

Taking these extra steps and precautions, should ensure a peaceful existence between you and your reptile neighbors.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
