Eastern Garter snakes are common across the North America. They range from Alaska to Central America. This is the only species of reptile that is found in Alaska and is the state reptile for Massachusetts. These reptiles are able to live almost anywhere as they do not have a specific diet and are able to adapt to numerous types of different habitats.

The diet of the Eastern Garter snake primarily consists of anything that they are able to overpower including earthworms, leeches, birds, fish, lizards, rodents and toads. Sometimes, a Garter snake will eat the eggs of other animals and fellow snakes.

While Eastern Garter snakes have neurotoxic venom that they are unable to produce enough venom to kill a human, nor do they have an effective way to deliver their venom. Because of this people are able to keep Garter snakes as pets.

Due to their small size they are able to live comfortably in tanks that range from ten to 30 gallons. They will need a pan that is large enough for bathing and accessories from a pet store that can provide them with a place to hide.

The Garter snake will dispel a musk that has a foul odor when they are disturbed. Because of this, the cage needs to have a substrate that dries quickly and the cage needs to be cleaned often. Usually, some Garters will no longer secrete their odor when they are handled regularly and become used to their owner.

Garter snakes are usually shy in their behavior and tend to enjoy quiet and peaceful environments. They are mostly active throughout the day, but are more so during the afternoon hours when they are able to bask. Your Garter snake should be able to hibernate for at least two to three months in a warm tank.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Snakes page.
