Blue Phase Eastern Garter (Snake Fun Facts)

Snakes are beautiful, and sometimes dangerous, creatures. Ranging from the tiny 4 inch long Leptotyphlops carlae just discovered in 2008 to the Giant Anaconda, these animals never cease to amaze. There are so many different species of snake, around 3,000 according to the latest figures, that fact often gets separated from fiction in people’s minds. Here are some things you should know about these awesome reptiles.

• The ancient Greeks depended on the god of healing and medicine, Asclepius, to send his sacred servants (snakes) into dreams to heal ailments with a single touch from their forked tongues.
• Legless lizards are often mistaken for snakes. While they both slither and lay eggs, legless lizards have ear openings on their heads, movable eyelids, inflexible jaws, and can detach their tails.
• Snakes move the entrance to their trachea (glottis) to one side while swallowing prey in order to continue to breathe. You can see it if you look on the floor of a snakes mouth.
• Right before a snake sheds, its skin gets dull and its eyes take on a cloudy bluish color.
• Snakes flick their tongues out to taste the air. When the tongue goes back into the mouth, it rests on the organ they smell with. Because of the fork in the tongue, they can not only tell that prey is near, but what side it is on.
• The fastest snake on land is the Black Mamba, named for the color of the inside of its mouth and not its gray skin. It can reach speeds of 10 – 12 miles per hour in short bursts over level ground. That speed is not easy to outrun.
• The most venomous snake in the world is the Belcher’s Sea Snake. It is found in the waters off Northern Australia and South East Asia and has venom 50 times more toxic than the King Cobra.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Snakes page.
