Red Tailed Boa Constrictor -
There are many different subspecies of the boa constrictor. The most commonly found boa that is sold in pet stores and kept as pets is the Red tailed boas. Owning a red tailed boa can sometimes be a challenge due to their size and is not recommended for beginners. Boas are able to live for 25 to 30 years and can weigh up to 50 pounds. Boas will usually be eight to ten feet in length. These muscular snakes may be expensive and potentially dangerous to the owner.
It is usually recommended that if your snake is over six feet long, you should have someone else with you during feeding. You will also need to have a large enclosure for your boa that is secure and durable, as these snakes are incredibly strong.
The temperament of the red tailed boas is usually quite docile. However, a boa that is captive bred will be much healthier and docile than ones found in the wild. Young boas are able to be kept in a glass terrarium, but as they grow they will usually need an enclosure that is custom made. These snakes are extremely powerful and will escape from their enclosure each chance they get. You will usually need to make sure that your enclosure has a locking mechanism to keep them from getting out and roaming around your home.
The most popular substrates are paper towels or newspaper. This is the best option to monitor the health of your snake and it is easy to clean. You should always make sure that your red tailed boa has a fresh supply of water to drink. Also, your boa will usually no longer be able to fit into a bathing pan and will need to be let out of their enclosure so that they are able to soak and bath in a tub or pool.
