How do Corn Snakes get into attics? They are spectacular climbers, that's how.

DESCRIPTION: You can see how snakes are able to get inside roofs and ceilings and attics.

When people think about animals hiding in their attic they usually think of rodents and squirrels. They rarely think about reptiles such as snakes as they are commonly found slithering around on the ground. However, corn snakes can be found in the attic. Most snakes enjoy climbing and will do so for food. The snakes that can be found in the attic are usually nonvenomous, but most people still don’t enjoy having them there.

When there is a snake in your attic, there are usually rodents there, as well. Rats and mice leave distinct odors and the snakes will follow the scent up to your attic. The best way to keep snakes from climbing into your home is by sealing up openings and holes in the home that can give rodents and reptiles access. Some of these openings are found where the soffit meets the shingles on the roof, vents, and so forth.

You can either get the snakes out of your home by using a glue trap or by using a pillowcase. If you choose to use a glue trap, you will need to check the trap frequently so that the snake isn’t suffering by being unable to move. If you choose to catch the snake and relocate the reptile, you can use a pillowcase. Catching a snake does not need to be as challenging as it may seem. You can grasp the reptile behind the head and support the lower portion of his body. Once you have a grasp on the snake you are able to place him in the pillowcase to relocate him. Usually, you are able to avoid killing a reptile and that should be your last resort. You are also able to hire a professional if you are not interested in catching the snake yourself of using traps.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
