Decatur GA Wildlife Information

Georgia Wildlife Commission: 770-918-6400

Georgia Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Decatur, you can contact the Georgia Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Georgia Fish & Wildlife Agency. Georgia game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Decatur wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Decatur like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Peachtree Pest Control at 404-334-2961.

I also have listed several sources for free Decatur wildlife help. One example, if you've found an injured animal or lost baby bird or other baby animal is the Decatur Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 678-418-1111 Or just read below for more info about the wild animals of Decatur.

Georgia is a very hot, humid state, even in the regions of the north where mountains dot the landscape. It is full of lush vegetation, and has a variety of habitats. This state not only has tall, majestic forests, it also has Okefenokee Swamp, a 438,000 acre wetland on the Georgia-Florida border. As you might imagine, this swamp is home to a variety of creatures. These creatures, however, aren't just reptiles and amphibians. The marsh is made up of both wet and dry land, and mammals abound within its protected space. Okefenokee Swamp has black bears, white-tailed deer, and otters. It does, of course, have its fair share of water moccasin snakes, alligators, and turtles.

The rest of Georgia is also full of animals, and because the weather is so warm all year long, there is an abundance of reptiles and cold-blooded creatures not found in the northern states. Warm weather is also ideal for birds, and these birds can range in size from small robins to giant creatures with 8-foot wingspans.

Common pest animals in Georgia include armadillos, black bears, beavers, geese, coyotes, deer, wild hogs, rats, raccoons, squirrels, woodpeckers, and foxes. Not only do these animals enjoy what the warm temperatures have to offer as far as comfort, many of them live on the eggs and offspring from the array of reptiles, birds, and amphibians. Raccoons, in particular, are known to be raiders of nests in the hunt for eggs.

While there is an abundance of food year round for the creatures in this state, the human population of Georgia is so dense, contact with animals is inevitable. As people spread out into the wilds, animals find new ways to come by easy meals and easy shelter. Raccoons won't hesitate to leave the woods in favor of an attic when breeding season comes around, and all pest animals make special note of the homes that have garbage or food lying around outside.

In a state like Georgia, having small pest animals in the yard can eventually draw in larger predators. People living near bodies of water where alligators reside will regret having a plethora of small mammals lounging around the yard. It won't take long be the gator makes a mental note about where to get an easy meal.

Decatur Wildlife Tip
Remove skunks from backyard - The first thing you need to do when you need to remove skunks from the backyard is figure out why they are on your property to begin with. Leaving out garbage is one of the quickest ways to get a skunk into your yard. These animals mostly eat grubs and insects in the wild, but they are scavengers at heart and love a meal of old chicken bones or leftover hamburger. If you are leaving out garbage, it should always be in a can and not just on the ground in a bag. Any edible food left out will lure in a skunk. This means compost piles and vegetable gardens are targets. If you haven't fenced in your thriving veggies, you should consider at least buying some chicken wire to keep out the critters. Skunks might still come and investigate, but they won't be able to get inside and will eventually lose interest. Debris around the yard will also encourage skunks to seek refuge there. A big open yard without bushes or vegetation will not be appealing for any wild animal that fears predators. Once you have your yard under control, you can think about trapping the skunks and removing them. If captured alive, they can be relocated at least five miles away from the home.
Decatur, GA Wildlife News Clip:
Georgia Wildlife Control Emails: Hi, I had a few questions for you. I have had rats in the last few months in my yard. I assumed it came from the citrus tress and oranges being on ground. I cut them both down. I found a few dead ones and i saw a few live ones around. I noticed a stench from from attic a few weeks ago and I had my pest company look Into It. They have set bait traps and I have seen some dead lately but have not noticed any live ones. They were here monday and one bait station the bait was gone, so I assume there Is some still around. They looked for rat In attic but didnt find it but the stench Is still there and they put a trap up there. I have seen rat droppings down on the ist floor attic and they noticed on 2 floor attic. I was curious If I need to call someone like yourself in to check everything and get the rat out even If It is the remains? I would appreciate any Info you can give me. Thanks Rob

Hello, I'm Leslie. As you may or may not be aware there is a big black bear in Alpharetta. Its wandering around backyards and garbage cans. We aren't sure if you already have been aware of this or not. But we are afraid that it'll one day hurt one another. Now I hope you understand my concerns being a mother. But there are children in this neighborhood and some may not be aware of the danger. So please contact me back to tell me if your aware and already on the case or not. Leslie.

I live in city of Atlanta GA, in a 12 apartment building. There is a big skunk I have seen the last couple nights. A very white skunk. He or she doesn't seem to be too skittish around people. Tonight something happened between skunk and cat that didn't sound nice for the cat. How much would it cost to catch and hopefully relocate somewhere safer. I have a kid and that skunk casually cuts back and fourth directly in the path of my car. I'm Danielle and I can be reached almost anytime.

Hello...we live over in Cobb County...and we have an above ground pool. Although we spray regularly to prevent any grass/weeds growing near our pool...the moles continue to tunnel up to and under the edge of the pool...creating little divots/ holes underneath the pool. We thought about digging a trench around the pool and putting in aluminum flashing; or some type of wire....but, the pool is 28' round...so, it would be labor intensive. Do you have any suggestions? I realize that they are not harmful to plants and only eat the slugs, ants, etc...but, they have really created havoc with our pool. All around the edge are those little "pot holes"....not only unattractive but we are afraid that eventually they will penetrate the actual pool liner. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Mrs. McKinney

The major landmark in Marietta is the Big Chicken, a giant metal animated chicken structure atop what is now a KFC, located east of downtown at the city's busiest intersection. Even as the once remote city has become more urbanized, locals still love to talk about the big chicken. But some are tired of it, and want it gone. However, Marietta's residents are even more tired of Roof Rats, and want them gone ASAP. We will trap and remove rats from your home or building, and guarantee our work. We are not big chickens when it comes to dealing with rats. We specialize in Marietta bat exclusion and control. We work also service the towns of Newnan, and rodent removal in Panthersville, Peachtree City, Powder Springs, Redan, Riverdale, Roswell, Acworth, and extermination services in Alpharetta, Belvedere Park, Braselton, Buford, and snake removal in Candler-McAfee, Carrollton, Cartersville, Chamblee, and animal capture in Covington, Decatur, Doraville, Douglasville, Druid Hills, and wildlife trapping in Dunwoody, East Point, Fayetteville, Five Forks, Forest Park, Griffin, Kennesaw, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Mableton, Monroe, Mountain Park, Sandy Springs, Smyrna, Snellville, Sugar Hill, Tucker, Union City, Winder, and Woodstock.
