Ann Arbor MI Wildlife Information

Michigan Wildlife Commission: 517-284-9453

Michigan Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Ann Arbor, you can contact the Michigan Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Michigan Fish & Wildlife Agency. Michigan game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Ann Arbor wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Ann Arbor like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Frank's Wildlife Removal at 734-418-4035.

I also have listed several sources for free Ann Arbor wildlife help. One example, if you've found an injured animal or lost baby bird or other baby animal is the Ann Arbor Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 734-929-9324 Or just read below for more info about the wild animals of Ann Arbor.

Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Ann Arbor, MI

Michigan State bird: American robin
State mammal: White-tailed deer
State reptile: Painted turtle
State fish: Brook trout

Michigan is nestled in the Great Lakes, and as you might expect, the state receives a lot of snow and a lot of violent storms. Most of the state has a short, warm summer followed by a long, extremely cold winter. Only the southernmost aspect of the state escapes the long winter, but temperatures are still below freezing. Because of the colder temperatures and shorter season of warmth, the animals in this part of the country are ones that can hibernate or build up enough food storage to make it through a long winter. There are not many large mountains in this state, but there is a good mix of grassland and coniferous and deciduous forests. The thick pine trees allow wildlife to remain sheltered during the violent snows and rains that bombard this state.

The animals in Michigan are those most commonly found in the colder, upper part of the United States. White-tailed deer abound, but they are accompanied by elk and mule deer. These large grazers pave the way for large predators like cougars, wolves, coyotes and black bears. While most of these predators are of no real concern to the average homeowner, black bears have been known to raid garbage bins and bird feeders. Coyotes and wolves can also be dangerous, especially since they hunt in packs. There is enough game in Michigan to keep these predators in the wild for the most part, but farmers are acutely aware of their presence during months when food for the canines is scarce.

Michigan also is home to an animal called the fisher, or the fisher cat. This creature resembles a large weasel, but it is amazingly ferocious. It lives primarily in trees, and is one of the few animals comfortable hunting a porcupine.

Nuisance animals in Michigan are often the same nuisance animals in many other states. The dark pine forests of the state are wonderful for raccoons, opossums, skunks, and squirrels. People living near nature will eventually have to deal with an animal coming into their yard, and most homeowners in this part of the country are well-versed in proper preventative methods. Thankfully, one of the pest creatures Michigan residents don't have to worry a lot about are venomous snakes. There is only one species of rattlesnake in the region, and it is so rare that few life-long residents have ever seen one.

Ann Arbor Wildlife Tip
Why Are One Way Funnel Traps Effective Against Rodents? - There are a lot of traps to help you catch a rodent that has made its way into your home. Some of the most popular ones in the last few years have been the one way funnel traps. They are very popular because they are effective. They seem to get the job done every time, and there is a reason for that. Some rodents like rodents may not want to push on a gate to go into a trap, but because they can manage to go through such small spaces a funnel trap may seem like something they would naturally do.

Once the rodent has gone through the funnel they will not be able to make their way out the same way. Unfortunately for it, there really is no other way out. The good thing for the rodent and the animal lover is that funnel traps are non-lethal traps that will allow you to catch the rodent and release it somewhere far from your home. There is no clean up necessary and they will attract a rodent instead of making it suspicious about going into the trap. A single trap could catch more than one rodent if you have an infestation in your home.
Ann Arbor, MI Wildlife News Clip:
A small skunk has been spraying almost non stop since Friday 10-22. We went to see if there was a problem, but no answer at the door and I do not want to go into someone's backyard. I called the animal control number and was told to file a complaint with you... I cannot find a form on your website. The skunk is in Ann Arbor Michigan. There are also two horses that are in a corral that is filthy and the horses have flies all over them. If this is not the correct location to file a complaint please let me know. Linda

Hi My name is Joann and I have a complaint to make about a wildlife situation. They have a skunk which for the last four days has been spraying non stop. The poor thing is behind a high fence so I am not able to see what conditions he or she is in. He sounds hoarse from the spraying which he is doing non-stop even in the middle of the nights. I am afraid to contact the neighbors because I do not want problem, but I feel that someone needs to give them a visit and see what is wrong with the skunk. I am concern that the nights lately have been really cold and he is out there probably with no shelter whatsoever. I hope something can be done so this poor skunk does not end up going to a pound and being put down. I am so much against that and would hate it if he was because of the neglect of these people who seem to have only gotten a skunk to just keep him outside in all types of weather. Does this sound like neglect? To me it does, please email me to see if something can be done about this. :-( Sincerely, Joann

Hi, my roommate have left her raccoon in my apartment and the raccoon have 4 kitten and i work 6 days a week and i do not have time to take care of the rodents so i was wondering if you can take them or if you know anyone that can take them . if you can help me i will appreciate that . please i need them to be out of my apartment as soon as possible because i will go to visit my wildlife situation next week in Israel and i don't know what to do .... i need your help with removing the rodents please ( my ex roommate went back to her country and she's not coming back to the USA again ). Thank you, Ramiah

I have a skunk, who I have known to be aggressive but have been trying to rehab him for a few years (I got him with my ex-husband 4 years ago, and his aggression was brought on by how my ex husband treated him. When my ex husband and I divorced 2 years ago I took him in because I couldn't leave him behind), but today he lashed out at my 6 year old stepson and bit him on the face, I will not tolerate this from a skunk and want him to be removed. I will take him to the Washtenaw County animal shelter tomorrow but would like your opinion, or if your service will take care of him for me. Thank you, Megan
