New York State is home to one of the largest, progressive cities in the United States, but it is also the home of the forever-wild Adirondack Mountains, a place teeming with wildlife. Most residents in Upstate New York are no stranger to nature's critters, communing with snakes, wolves, deer, bobcats, and a plethora of other animals.

Due to the hot summers and cold winters in New York, the state is filled with a variety of animals. The largest of these is the elusive moose, which can weigh up to 1800 pounds. Recent years have seen an increase in black bear activity, and some sightings-denied by the New York Department of Environmental Control-of cougars have been reported. Of nuisance predators, coyotes are the most feared, raiding farms and killing livestock as their numbers continue to grow in all rural areas of the state. Urban coyotes are also a huge concern in New York, and pose a serious threat to pets and small children.

New York has an animal called a fisher, a fierce weasel-like animal that lives in the deep forests and grows up to 20 pounds. It is one of the only animals willing to hunt porcupine.

Nuisance animals are just as common in New York as in any other state. During the last decade, feral swine have moved north from Pennsylvania. These animals are fast, aggressive, and dangerous. With a voracious appetite, the swine are able to decimate large areas of food plots, and have become a plight on local farms.

Aside from the new sightings of invasive species like the wild hog, New York has a good number of native nuisance animals. Home owners are often battling with grey squirrels, flying squirrels, and red squirrels. Chipmunks and field mice abound. Yards and plants meet an untimely end meted out by voles and moles. Larger animals, like the black bear, like to wander into yards and feed on garbage or bird seed. These giant animals, often weighing 500 pounds or more, are slowly losing their fear of humans, making them bold and potentially dangerous. Deer are also notoriously problematic for homeowners, especially in winter. These timid grazers strip the bark off of trees and shrubs when food is scarce, often killing the plants by the time spring rolls around. And spring, when it does come, brings with it problems of breeding animals looking for safe havens to give birth. Raccoons, woodchucks, skunks, and opossums are all potential home invaders. Even the beaver can pose problems once the weather warms, blocking up streams and causing flood damage.

Residents of New York know the importance of keeping their homes in good repair and garbage sealed tight in containers. With such a variety of animals nuisance control has become second nature for most of the human population.

Albany Wildlife Tip
Hearing Rodent In The Ceiling Scratching Requires Urgent Attention - Anyone who hears rodents in the ceiling scratching and scrabbling will soon realize they have a very real problem in their home that needs to be dealt with swiftly and efficiently. Once rodents have reached the ceiling of your home it is likely that there are a great number of them in residence - rodents are sociable creatures who like to live communally. The inquisitive, adventurous nature of rodents means that once they are in your home they will be compelled to explore. An added problem is that the first rodent in any home is often a pregnant rodent - meaning there are likely to be babies in your home as well.

If you can hear rodents in the ceiling, scratching you must take some time to observe the comings and goings of these creatures in order to discover their favored entry and exit ways. Once you have established which their favorite path is, it is time to place a trap nearby. Leave the trap in place while you rodent proof your property - leaving only a single entry way for the rodents to use. It is then time to set the traps and wait. Once you have begun to catch the rodents you must either humanely kill them or remove them far from your property.
Albany, NY Wildlife News Clip:
Wildlife Services - New rodent mystery disease is not a cause for panic

Although not accurately presented on the TV newscast, the story seems to be about an equine mystery disease which has been found predominantly in the racing greyhound kennels in New York, New York, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas and New York. For more information, call the animal services of Albany, New York.

Outside of the racing venue, there was one case reported in New York, which was used for the news story, and two situations reported in New York. By now, there are probably more cases. Fortunately, we seem to be somewhat insulated from a lot of the hype. One horror story claimed that a Virginia squirrel club reported rumors of 10,000 show squirrels having died! Albany, NY County animal control says it will continue to help with domestic animal issues, but not with New York wildlife problems.

Whenever we hear the word "kennel" used in a negative context, we immediately conclude that it must be "those nasty boarding kennels" causing the problems and spreading the diseases. Animal and carcass removal services in Albany, NY County is dedicated to helping New York and Albany.

While it is true that a boarding kennel does provide a situation where several pets are in close proximity for extended periods of time, my experience has proven that every reasonable precaution is taken beforehand, and the guests are closely and regularly watched for any abnormality.
