Canada is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Burlington wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Burlington animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Ontario County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Ontario County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Burlington Wildlife Tip:

What do wildlife rehabilitators do with bats?

Wildlife rehabilitators exist to rehabilitate creatures who have been injured, sick or need protecting from outside entities. Most creatures that go into a wildlife facility, are either cured and let lose to reenter their natural habitats, or they are held in captivity because they can no longer survive in the wild. Some bats are also on the protected species lists and wildlife rehabilitation facilities are allowed to keep certain species for educational purposes.

Bats are very delicate creatures and if they need to be rehabilitated, only a wildlife professional can do so. When you call a wildlife facility to take the bats, their first contact would be with you. Some form of screening would take place where your information, location and nature of circumstance would be recorded. Most centres do not take bats in for rehabilitation if it has bitten a human or another animal. They are instead, licensed to destroy the creature and the victim would be immediately taken for testing for the rabies virus.

When the rehabilitators have made the decision to retrieve the bat, they would walk with a 'bat rescue kit' and most likely, they would attempt to 'rescue' the bat after dark. While rescuing the bat, they would determine whether the bat needs to be rehydrated as these creatures have very high metabolisms and can quickly dispense of their energy reserves. They would also assess whether the bat is injured. If the bat is not injured, more than likely the rehabilitator would release it outside so that the bat can find its own shelter.

Should the bat be injured, the rehabilitator would need to transfer the bat to a transportation cage, ultimately the only legal time a bat can be caged. Once it is safely in the cage and taken to the center, the bat would be evaluated for symptoms of CNS which may indicate whether the bat has rabies. The bat would then be physically examined, once signs of rabies are negative. Physical injuries such as broken bones and open wounds would have to be checked. A veterinarian may be called in to determine whether the bat can fly again, if it has broken its bones. The bat would also be weighed, and its measurements taken. Lactated Ringer's Solution would need to be administered to prevent dehydration of the creature while all these tests are being conducted.

The bat would have to be held in captive until it has been cured of its injury or illness. Since bats have large dietary requirements, they would need to be weighed very regularly to determine whether enough food is being provided for them while in captivity. Closer to the winter season, the bat would tend to gain more than half its regular weight, but this would only mean that it is preparing to store its food for hibernation and would still need to be provided with its regular amount of food. Of course, during winter, less food can be provided as bats would not hunt as much for their food.
